Gorbachev supports formation of social-democratic party

Former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev says it is necessary to create an independent social-democratic party in Russia.

"We had this on the level of an idea, we have been delaying it, but it is necessary to start to create this party," Gorbachev told a roundtable in the Gorbachev Foundation.

"Real parties are created within society," he said. In Russia, "they have created one party that covers everything," he said. "It is worse than the CPSU [Communist Party of the Soviet Union]. It might be convenient for somebody but nothing will come of it," he said.
