The XXI century will be a сentury either of total all-embracing crisis or of moral and spiritual healing that will reinvigorate humankind. It is my conviction that all of us - all reasonable political leaders, all spiritual and ideological movements, all  faiths - must help in this transition to a triumph of humanism and justice, in making the XXI century a century of a new human renaissance.

Mikhail Gorbachev meets Shimon Peres

1/8

On 22 June 2015, Mikhail Gorbachev met the former President of Israel Shimon Peres, currently on a visit to Moscow.

Shimon Peres is Israel’s oldest politician and statesman. Apart from his stint as President of the country, Mr Peres served twice as the Prime Minister of Israel and was the country’s Foreign Minister three times. He also led various government ministries at different times. Shimon Peres won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize.

Following his retirement as President in July 2014, Mr Peres has mostly focused on the activities of the Peres Center for Peace, a non-for-profit, non-governmental, non-political organization he founded in 1996 to promote peacebuilding between Israel and its neighbors (particularly between Israelis and Palestinians) as well as between Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel. Shimon Peres told Mikhail Gorbachev about the activities of his Center and his future plans. Promoting peaceful resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will continue to be one of his top priorities. He will also focus on environmental activities and support for new technology research. Shimon Peres presented Mikhail Gorbachev with his most recent book, Ben Gurion: A Political Life, and congratulated him on the birth of his great-grandson.

Mikhail Gorbachev outlined the activities of the Gorbachev Foundation and presented his most recently published book, After the Kremlin.
